A diary is basically a monologue through which people record their feelings, while simoultaneously providing a form of self-expression. As Susan Sontag says, « the journal is a vehicle for my sense of selfhood », and a diary is generally written for the individual’s own sake but when it is used as a form of expression, it is necessary to expose private matters to the outside world, and in « Winter Journey » Araki’s diction allows the viewer to enter his heart.
